Don’t let them talk to the boobies (Guest post : 00:30)

Peter Tan is the one who made me realise this. He used to be from the same church as me. Before I know him as a blogger, I had often seen this aloof guy with pony tail around the church in his wheelchair. He was in the RCIA, one year after my baptism.

Before I mustered enough courage to talk to him, I probably never know other people in wheelchairs before. Serious. I was that ignorant.

One day, I found a blog post by him that people like him who are in wheelchairs often ‘talk to the boobs’ because abled people like us often stand and look down to talk to people like him. Therefore, their eye level see only our chest.

Since then, if I am going to talk to anyone in wheelchairs, I will remember to squat down or at least bend a bit. It will make the conversation more meaningful and we make the person in the wheelchair more at ease too.

So, remember! Don’t let your boobies do the talking!

Cheers!

  1. Oh well, it’s always my habit to not look down at people when talking to them, it’s common courtesy, I think.. But if we weren’t brought up to be sensitive, which I think is normal if we don’t have family members or friends who are disabled, it doesn’t come easily..
