Eden: Social Welfare Services

Eden Handicap Service CentreOne of the main services offered by Eden Handicap Service Centre is the social welfare service. Eden Handicap complements the government’s Social Welfare Department in the following ways:

  • one-stop welfare organization — Eden Handicap provides services to assist people with disabilities obtain their OKU cards (or Orang Kurang Upaya, literally translated as “People With Disabilities”) and other benefits. Eden Handicap also facilitates applications for Old Age benefits and monthly cash aid for those living below the poverty line. Besides that, Eden Handicap also assists people with disabilities who have been placed in jobs to apply for their monthly Disabled Pension Allowance of RM 200.
  • home visits — Eden Handicap organizes visits to the homes of people with disabilities in the community on a weekly basis to assess their well-being, needs and eligibility for benefits and services such as medical and food aids. Eden staff provides emotional support to people living with disabilities and help them become involved in their own communities, besides monitoring and keeping track on their progress and referring them to other sources of assistance when the needs arise.
  • transportation to ferry the disabled to the hospital and the children to school. Eden Handicap also loans / rents / assists in the purchase of aucillary equipments such as wheelchairs, walkers, calipers, etc.
  • job placement — As soon as the people with disabilities acquire the necessary job trainings, Eden Handicap then takes the initiative to arrange with potential employers for suitable job placements. Once successful, they will be provided counseling sessions and their progress and behavior will be monitored.
  • social activities — Eden Handicap provides fellowship opportunities to people with disabilities once in 2 months. It has proven to be a popular way of bringing them together as they socialize and interact with one another from the local community.
