The cloth decision

Posted on Oct 2, 2007 and filed under Environment

The problem of increasing landfills throughout the world is posing an increasing health threat to the world’s population. In addition, landfills are affecting the environment in a detrimental manner. Trash and waste disposed from households daily are dumped into landfills worldwide. Where once we see green grass and beautiful trees, these have been replaced by horrible looking landfills that seem to increase by the day.

One of the factors contributing to the landfill problem is improper waste management. And if you think you have nothing to do with it, think again. Sad to say, with every adorable baby you see, tons of disposable diapers filled with baby poop are being dumped in landfills daily. Disposable diapers take years and years to disintegrate, and seriously, if you think about it, it’s like bring human excrement back into the environment, a surefire formula for diseases.

So what can we do? In my own personal bid to save the environment, I have recently made the decision to switch to cloth diapering for my son. Using cloth diapers means being kind to the environment, and at the same time reducing waste and contamination to the earth we so love. Of course, if you think about it, there is now more effort on my part in terms of laundering and cleaning, and it may appear as though my small sacrifice will not matter much now, but in the long run, it will. Although I have only partially switched to cloth diapering, I am convinced that this is making a difference, if not now, then for the future.

  1. Good choice and I hope others follow your path! I have fully cloth diapered my first and now onto my second using the same exact diapers. They are still in excellent condition and I try to line dry as much as possible which also helps to use less energy and the breakdown of the materials used. I have actually gone on several 2 week vacations with the kids and used cloth diapers only. Yes, I washed diapers on vacation and it is just part of our lives.

One thing a lot of people ask is if all the washing with water isn’t just as wasteful as disposable diapers. The simple answer is no. I don’t think people realize it takes a lot of water to create plastic too! Plus it is used just once and than thrown out to sit in a landfill. Cloth diapers are made once and used over and over again. I am going on 4 years right now with the same set of diapers!

I can just bark about this subject all night, but cloth diapers are not like they used to be. There is just a whole movement behind them. Here is the first website I found on Google just for a quick glimpse into what the new cloth diapers provide. Cloth diapers can be just as convenient as disposables!

  2. GnomeyNewt - exactly my sentiments! The cloth diapers shown in the website you have provided are similar to the ones I am using. They are so gorgeous and so versatile too!

You’ve done a good job on protecting the environment!

  3. I applaud your bold move to switch from disposable to cloth diapers. You were right that it may not seem like it would make a difference, but I’d like to think that it takes only one post (such as this) to set an example.

And hopefully more mothers will follow suit :)

    Well done! :)
