Alternatives to using plastic bags

Posted on Dec 23, 2008 and filed under Environment

So you are going to the market to get a week’s worth of groceries, but how are you going to bring them all home now that we know the effects of excessive plastic bags to our marine animals and on the environment.

Some cost-saving and eco-friendly alternatives to using the plastic bags:

  • Cloth bags
You could either make your own cloth bags or you could buy one from the stores. Cloth bags are great because nobody throws them away since they can be washed many times over and can be reused again and again. Norquest Bags has a variety of cloth bags designs that you could copy or probably just buy from them.
  • Reusable bags
Using reusable bags is also another option if sewing your own cloth bag is not one :D

Enviro-tote has been creating environmentally friendly promotional tote bags since 1990. Each of the totes is individually cut, hand-stitched and screen-printed. However, orders are filled starting at 50 bags.

  • Envirosax® reusable shopping bags, on the other hand, can be purchased individually. Envirosax® reusable bags are not only chic, inexpensive (starting price of USD 8.50) and compact, the bags are also environmentally friendly and they carry eco-friendly messages with style! Blissfully Domestic is giving away one Envirosax® reusable bag. Head on over and learn how you can win one!

  • Shopping basket/Trolley
Shopping baskets may be a better alternative compared to trolleys because shopping baskets are small and can be placed in the car. Trolleys, on the other hand, are bigger and more cumbersome to bring along whenever you go grocery shopping.
  • Box
For a cheaper alternative, you could use a box to contain all your items. These boxes cost next to nothing and they can be reused and recycled :D
